Europe 2001: Insolvency figures up as economy sags
The weak economic development in Europe in 2001 led to an increase in insolvency totals. Compared with 2000, the number of insolvencies in the Western European economic area rose by 5.9 percent to almost 200,000 (2000: 188,500). From 1996 onwards, with the economy healthy, the insolvency situation eased: the total declined from 208,600 that year to a low of 184,200 in 1999. But the very next year saw a renewed rise, of 2.3 percent to 188,500 cases.
